Also with current typical consumer tech SSDs, as the drive gets "filled-up" its overall response can degrade very substantially. This is a result of the technology and architecture. However, some manufacturer's do introduce data management algorithms that can help reduce that effect (BTW, this is not like the R/W HDD performance degradation I've discussed previously on HWA that occurs as a function of where the head is physically radially located at a given time on a platter)

Thus, for performance, it's better to buy as much capacity as you can and to move as much low-demand data as you can off the SSD. Exactly what you do of course is a personal juggling act between dollars, performance needed, and life expectancy you expect from the drive.

Personally, in my purchasing decisions I treat an high-usage SSD as an item I am almost guaranteed to have to throw away and replace in 3 years. Whereas HDDs typically last longer and can be "recycled" as archive/backup media when I do an storage upgrade to improve system performance. I do anticipate that within 2 to 3 years we will start seeing generally affordable long-lived high-usage SSDs for consumers (assuming of course that economy factors remain stable or improve :~ )
